User Guide
Everything you need to know to get the most out of Skill Track Pro.
Getting Started
Skill Track Pro works completely offline. There are no accounts to create and no data leaves your device. When you first open the app, you'll see a short walkthrough that explains the key features. You can skip this and come back to it later from the Profile screen.
The app has four main screens, accessible from the bottom navigation bar:
- Dashboard — your home screen showing all players at a glance
- Matches — a history of all recorded matches
- Teams — optional groupings for your players
- Profile — settings, backup, and data management
Adding Players
To add a player, tap the + button on the Dashboard. You only need to enter a first name or nickname — no full names, no dates of birth, no personal data. This is by design for children's privacy.
- Tap the + button on the Dashboard
- Enter the player's first name or nickname
- Tap Add Player
Your new player will appear on the Dashboard with their stats showing zero matches. They're ready for their first match.
Recording a Match
This is the core feature of Skill Track Pro. The Match Recorder turns your phone into a digital coaching clipboard with big, colourful buttons designed for quick tapping on the sideline.
- Open a player's profile from the Dashboard
- Tap Start Match
- Enter the opponent name and select home or away
- Tap Start to begin recording
Once the match starts, you'll see the Match Recorder screen with four large action buttons, a timer, and an action log at the bottom.
Action Buttons
The Match Recorder shows four action buttons in a 2x2 grid. Each button is colour-coded so you can tap without looking. The buttons change depending on whether you're tracking an Outfield or Goalkeeper player.
Outfield Actions
Goalkeeper Actions
Each button also has a small icon for accessibility, so you can identify actions even without relying on colour alone.
Goalkeeper Mode
At the top of the Match Recorder, you'll see a toggle to switch between Outfield and Goalkeeper. If your player goes in goal during a match, simply toggle to Goalkeeper and the buttons will change to goalkeeper-specific actions.
You can switch back and forth as many times as needed during a match. Each action is recorded with its position, so the stats will show a breakdown of what they did in each role.
Action Details
When you tap an action button, a detail panel slides up. This is where you add more information about the action. The details differ depending on the action type:
- Pass — Choose foot (left/right), direction (forward/backward/sideways), and whether it led to an assist
- Shot — Choose foot, whether it was a goal, and tap the 3x3 zone grid to record where the shot was placed
- Dribble — Choose direction (inside/outside/forward)
- Challenge — Choose outcome (won/cleared/blocked)
- Save — Tap the 3x3 zone grid to record where the save was made, and whether a goal was conceded
- Claim — Choose type (cross/through ball) and location (inside box/outside box)
- Distributions — Choose the method (throw/roll, kick from ground, kick from hands)
After filling in the details, tap the big green tick for a successful action or the red X for an unsuccessful one. You'll see a full-screen flash confirmation with haptic feedback.
Match Timer & Periods
The timer at the top of the Match Recorder counts up from zero. You can pause and resume it as needed (e.g. during stoppages or half time).
Below the timer, you can select the current period:
- 1st Half / 2nd Half — for standard matches
- Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 — for tournaments or festivals that use quarters
- Extra Time — for cup matches that go to extra time
When you change period, the timer keeps running so you have a continuous record of the match.
Minutes Tracking
Skill Track Pro tracks how many minutes your player spends on the pitch. Use the On Pitch and Off Pitch buttons to record when a player is substituted on or off.
This creates "stints" — periods of playing time. At the end of the match, you'll see the total minutes played, and this data feeds into the player's season-long statistics.
Match Summary
When you end a match, you'll see a Match Summary screen showing everything that happened. This includes:
- Final score (home and away)
- Total actions attempted and success rate
- Breakdown by action type (passes, shots, etc.)
- Shot placement grid showing where shots went
- Comparison to the player's season average (when they have 2 or more matches)
From the summary, you can share a branded match report card with parents or save it to your camera roll.
Player Stats & Charts
Tap any player on the Dashboard to see their full statistics. The Player Details screen has tabs for Outfield, Goalkeeper, and Recent Matches.
For each position, you'll see:
- Total Actions — a count of every action recorded across all matches
- Progress Chart — a line chart showing success rate match by match, with a trend indicator (improving, steady, or declining)
- Skills Radar Chart — a four-point polygon showing the balance across action types (e.g. Pass 70%, Shot 44%, Dribble 61%, Challenge 63%)
- Left/Right Foot — percentage breakdown of which foot is used most
- Goals & Assists — season totals for outfield players
- Saves — season total for goalkeepers
Shot & Save Zones
One of the most visual features of Skill Track Pro is the 3x3 zone grid. This represents the goal divided into nine zones:
Each cell shows the count of shots or saves in that zone. The colour intensity reflects how often that zone is used:
- Green — successful (on target / saved)
- Red — unsuccessful (off target / conceded)
For outfield players, the Shot Patterns grid shows where their shots are being placed across all matches. For goalkeepers, the Save Patterns grid shows where saves are being made (and where goals are being conceded).
Over time, clear patterns emerge. You might notice a player always shoots to the same corner, or a goalkeeper struggles with saves in a particular zone.
Pattern Insights
Below the zone grids, you'll find automatically generated pattern insights. These are plain-English observations based on your player's data across all matches. For example:
- "Favours shooting top left"
- "Prefers playing forward (72% success)"
- "Work on saves to mid centre (33% success)"
These insights update automatically as more matches are recorded. They're designed to highlight strengths to celebrate and areas where focused practice could help.
Teams
If you coach or track players across multiple teams (e.g. a Saturday team and a Sunday team), you can create teams to organise your players.
- Go to the Teams tab
- Tap Add Team
- Give the team a name
When starting a match, you can optionally assign it to a team. The Dashboard can then be filtered by team to show only relevant players.
Export & Backup
Skill Track Pro keeps all your data on your device. To protect against data loss, you can back up everything and export reports.
CSV Player Report
From a player's profile, tap the download icon to export a detailed CSV report. This includes all their stats, match history, and action breakdowns. You can open it in Excel or Google Sheets.
Full Backup
From the Profile screen, tap Backup Data. This creates a complete JSON backup of all your players, matches, and actions, and opens your email app so you can send it to yourself.
Restore
To restore a backup, tap Restore Data on the Profile screen and select your backup file. The restored data is added alongside any existing data — it won't delete anything you already have.
Sharing Match Reports
After a match, you can share a branded match summary card. This generates an image with the key stats from the match — perfect for sending to parents in a WhatsApp group or team chat.
- Complete a match and view the Match Summary
- Tap the Share button
- A branded card is generated with the match stats
- Share via WhatsApp, Messages, email, or save to your camera roll
Tips for Match Day
Skill Track Pro is designed to be used while watching the game. Here are some tips to get the most out of it:
- Keep it simple at first. Start by just tapping the action buttons and choosing success or fail. Don't worry about filling in every detail. You can add more detail as you get comfortable.
- Eyes on the pitch. The big, colourful buttons mean you can tap without looking at the screen. Learn the button positions and you'll be recording actions instinctively.
- Record as much or as little as you like. Use it to focus on areas for development, capture a full match performance, or highlight where your player is doing well but doesn't believe they are. The app works for your needs.
- Use the timer. Start the timer when the match kicks off so your action log shows accurate game minutes.
- Talk about it afterwards. The real value comes from sitting down with your player after the match and showing them the data. "Look, you attempted 24 passes and 18 of them were successful. That's brilliant."
- Celebrate the attempts. The whole point of Skill Track Pro is to make effort visible. A player who attempts 30 dribbles and succeeds with 10 is developing far more than one who never tries.
